Here is the menu in both Chinese and English. I tend to eat here about two or three times a week - I remember mentioning grandmother's bones a few weeks ago. Recently, I met up with an old friend and, as you do, we ended up going for a bite to eat. Well, the bite to eat was really an excuse for the two of us to drink more than the recommended daily intake of alcohol of an entire troop of PLA soldiers. Of course, the trouble with the beer intake is the beer outflow. It has to be dealt with. Fortunately, the restaurant has a beer recycling facility at the rear, beside the kitchen. I squeeze past the boss, two waitresses and two cooks who are sweating over two massive woks and try to enter the palatial lavatorial set up. It is, of course, of the squat variety. But, being male and only recycling liquids, that is not an issue. To my surprise, I find the entrance blocked by another young girl who is busily cleaning vegetables. But she kindly apologises and steps back to allow me full access to the hole in the floor. I try to ignore the vegetables balanced precariously beside me as I take advantage of the amenities and remind myself never to order stir-fried green stuff ever again.

In 1996, a young girl of approximately 10 years old was seen wandering around after a flood. A old local woman ‘adopted’ her and everyone forgot her. Unfortunately, the woman is a schizophrenic who survives by gathering and selling trash. Neighbours avoided the house as it stank of rubbish.
The girl was kept inside the old woman’s home and never allowed out. The room had no water, electricity or lavatory facilities. Neighbours finally found her last week, where she was living among the rubbish piled all over the building. Now around 20 years old, she is unable to bear sunlight or to even stand up. She permanently crouches “as if hiding.” All she says is “Father, I was wrong,” over and over again. Both the old woman and the girl are now being treated in hospital. Before being shipped off to hospital, the press and media were invited to come and stare at the poor misfortunate, as were the local citizens. There is no privacy in China.

A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Sudanese student today defended the British teacher accused of insulting Islam saying he had chosen to call a teddy bear Mohammad because it was his own name. Gillian Gibbons, a 54-year-old teacher, was arrested on Sunday after complaints that she had insulted Islam's Prophet by allowing the bear to be named Mohammad. She is facing a third night in jail without being formally charged. The boy said: "The teacher asked me what I wanted to call the teddy. I said Mohammad. I named it after my name." He said he was not thinking of Islam's Prophet when asked to suggest a name, adding most of the class agreed with his choice. Described as “timid and polite,” Ms Gibbons - facing 40 lashes for the 'offence' - had told friends how she was loving her life in the country. The teacher, from Liverpool, let her class of seven-year-olds choose the teddy’s name as part of a project at Unity High School.

YouTube stops account of Egypt anti-torture activistYouTube has suspended the account of a prominent Egyptian anti-torture activist who posted videos of what he said was brutal behaviour by some Egyptian policemen, the activist said. Wael Abbas said close to 100 images he had sent to YouTube were no longer accessible, including clips depicting purported police brutality, voting irregularities and anti-government demonstrations. YouTube, owned by search engine giant Google Inc <GOOG.O>, did not respond to a written request for comment. A message on Abbas's YouTube user page, http://youtube.com/user/waelabbas, read: "This account is suspended." "They closed it (the account) and they sent me an e-mail saying that it will be suspended because there were lots of complaints about the content, especially the content of torture," Abbas told Reuters in a telephone interview. Abbas, who won an international journalism award for his work this year, said that of the images he had posted to YouTube, 12 or 13 depicted violence in Egyptian police stations. Abbas was a key player last year in distributing a clip of an Egyptian bus driver, his hands bound, being sodomised with a stick by a police officer -- imagery that sparked an uproar in a country where rights groups say torture is commonplace. That tape prompted an investigation that led to a rare conviction of two policemen, who were sentenced to three years in prison for torture. Egypt says it opposes torture and prosecutes police against whom it has evidence of misconduct.
Rights activists said by shutting down Abbas's account, YouTube was closing a significant portal for information on human rights abuses in Egypt just as Cairo was escalating a crackdown on opposition and independent journalists. The Internet has emerged in Egypt as a major forum for critics of the Egyptian government. "The goal is not showing the violence, it is showing police brutality. If his goal was just to focus on violence without any goal, that is a problem. But Wael is showing police brutality in Egypt," said Gamal Eid, head of the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information. Dede, nicknamed "Tree Man", has been treated like a freak show because of the horn-like growths. He was sacked from his job, his wife left him and he was shunned by his neighbours. The 35-year-old, who only has one name, is unable to work because he cannot use his hands and lives in poverty with his two teenage daughters. He said he cannot travel anywhere and is forced to stay in his parents' house because his hands and feet are so heavy and cumbersome due to the growths. He first noticed the warts after he cut his knee as a teenager, and in 1993 he was taken to hospital but doctors could not find a cure. Dede, who lives in the village of Tanjung Jaya about 100 miles south of the capital Jakarta, told reporters: "First it felt itchy and some warts appeared on my feet. used by the Chinese government.
It comes less than two years before China hosts the next Olympics - an
event it was given after promising to improve its human rights record.
China's penal system is surrounded by a wall of secrecy, but an
investigation by Sky's China correspondent Dominic Waghorn found
between 3,500 and 10,000 people are put to death each year.
The volume of executions has meant China has invented new ways of
killing, mobilising and mechanising its execution system.
A brochure acquired by Sky news reveals details of China's new
execution buses now operating across the country.
Fitted with lethal injection equipment they can deliver on-the-spot
executions.
Sky news spoke to a number of people affected by the executions
including the family of Nie Shubin who was only 20 when he was wrongly
accused of rape and murder.
His mother and sister told how he was held in jail for three years,
without being allowed to see his family.
Nie Shuie said: "They never let me see him after his arrest. That
continued till the end. I never saw him again before he was executed.
"And nobody told us that he had been executed."
Nie was accused of attacking a woman in a field near his home, but only
after his execution did another man confess to the attack.
In an exclusive report earlier this year, Sky news gathered evidence
linking China's execution system and its booming organ transplant
industry.
Amnesty International says the demand for transplant organs may be
driving the high number of executions in China.
Even by official figures more people are executed every year in China

Beijing-based Jeboo.com and an Internet cafe in Shanghai face a legal showdown with Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney, Paramount Pictures, Columbia Pictures, and Universal Studios, the Xinhua news agency reported. The film-makers allege Jeboo.com created software the cafe used to run a movie download business, and they are demanding 3.2 million yuan ($432,000) in compensation, Xinhua said. Jeboo.com promotes itself as "My on-line cinema" and claims to be China's biggest film download provider with close to 30,000 movies and television series customers can copy onto computers. A company official, Xie Jiangping, naturally "refused to comment on whether it had violated the film companies' copyright," said Xinhua. The case to be heard in Shanghai promises to be one more skirmish in a battle of words and legal threats between China and the United States, which says the rough-and-tumble Asian economy does far too little to stop commercial pirates. Washington has complained to the World Trade Organization that slipshod Chinese rules have allowed a booming industry in pirated American goods, including movies and software, costing American firms billions of dollars. The Chinese move comes as a surprise just weeks after a visit to China by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, which he said he hoped would lead to a long-term dialogue. "At present, it appears the USS Kitty Hawk strike group will not be making a port call in Hong Kong as previously planned as a result of a last minute denial by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs," State Department spokeswoman Nicole Thompson said. The United States was pressing China for an explanation and to reconsider its decision, she added. There are several possible reasons for why the Chinese regime is acting like babies in its typical childish-with-Chinese characteristics manner-- including U.S. plans to sell Taiwan a $940 million upgrade to its missile system and a meeting last month between President George W Bush and the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Buddhist leader who Beijing considers a rival to its imperial schemes. What you see on the right is the sign above one of my favourite local restaurants. It is a kind of Sichuan type place. I.e. They do Sichuan food, but are not actually from Sichuan. At least not all of them. The restaurant is clean, cheap, friendly and the food is delicious.
